Power surge problems

Sandy knocked out my power. It's back now but...
When the power first came back on we found the following

1) a bunch of breakers had tripped
2) some of the gfi's (kitchen , etc) had tripped
3) several electronics are fried (washing machine,blueray, microwave oven, some older tv's, wireless telephone, compact florescent lights, etc)

One of the compact florescent lights looked really bad.
Not everything was damaged, desktop computers most compact florescent, and most everything else is ok.

Just wondering if there is any possibility that there is damage to the house wiring or if there is anything else I should be looking for?

You probably got a surge during the storm, or when the Neutral came loose somewhere down the line, between the transformer and your place, it wrecked havoc. After the Ice Storm of 2006 here in Central Illinois, one of the things that I did was place a Whole House Surge protector on my panel, due to I lost a microwave & a circuit board in our gas range.

: That's just it. We don't know. Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

During a storm like that and power is known to fail or has already failed, would it be wise to just flip the master breaker to block it all or won't have any affect?

Whilst it is theoretically possable,
I think the chances are low.
Damage to appliances is common
but damage to the wiring is quite low.
If it involves an insurance claim,
get an good electricain to test the instalation
this will put your mind at ease.

And until the power system is fully operational again
dont be surprised if the system has a few ups and downs.
