power on, no lights

just bought a fixer upper and can't seem to get overhead light or receptacles to work in one bedroom. Small two pronged tester "lights" on B/W and B/ground wires in overhead and when plugged into receptacle. ohmmeter shows 120v at all these junctions. on/off switch does control "power" to overhead wiring. I am so dumb please help !! or i may grab the white and black wires to see if they are reaally hot!! thanks for your help

barry,
If the wires test good then it must be in the fixtures. The duplex outlets might be so worn that they no longer make contact with the lrongs on a plug. Change the duplex outlet with the power turned off.
Same thing with the overhead light. If the wires test good turn off the power at the breaker panel for that circuit and replace the fixture. Be sure the power is off properly or your joke will become reality.
