Pot lights wiring diagram


Hi, I'm trying to figure out what wiring connection I have to make for 6 pot lights to be controlled by dimmer, can I use parallel wiring connection or a series wiring connection, pls. help.

To keep it easy you run the feed to the switch and then come out of the switch to your first light and daisy chain the rest. This will put your lights into parellel.

If you put them in series they will be dim. They need to be in parallel.

If you do decide to add more than 6 cans, make sure your dimmer can handle the wattage. Cheaper dimmers max around 600 which is perfectly fine for 6 cans.

Dimmer capacity is by load...not number of lights
With CFL's or LED bulbs you could control quite a few
But limiting a 600w dimmer to 6 cans is a good idea if they can take a 100w bulb
Even with 75w bulbs 6 cans is near the limit for a 600w dimmer

In one room I split 9 cans between 2 dimmers & a switch for more control of the light

Right you are about the load not the number. If you put in 75watt bulbs you could go as high as 8 in theory but that is pushing the max.

That has generally been my experience. Dimmable CFL bulbs are still crazy expensive so I was assuming 1 can @ 100 watts.
