Pot Lights/Hot Air Duct

Hi.

I'm trying to install halogen pot lights in my basement, and ran into a "snag". In about 1/2 the room, a considerable number of the joist bays are taken up with heating ducts (all hot air ducts), and all at the most inconvenient places.

Given the bay is 16 inches wide, and the ducts take up less than half that, is there any way I can install retrofit cans into these bays? The wire is NMD-90 14/2 and I know to run wire into these bays I need to wrap insulation around them. I attached a photo of what I mean, with the red circle showing the area "available" to install a retrofit can (less than 4 " in diameter).

Thanks for any advice. Really though, if I can't put pot lights there, I can't use pot lights, the layout simply won't work.

Take pictures and measure so you know where the open spot is. Run your wire but make sure you leave a nice size loop. Sheet rock and cut in old work recess cans is the best/easiest thing you can do in this situation.
