Portable generator has no output. Briggs Stratton 5500, model 01646

Generator has no output. I am hoping that flashing the field will get it producing.

Let us know how it goes.

Flash away. btw what is flashing the field?

Before doing that have you tried the basics. Engine running? Breakers or fuses tripped? Measured voltage at all outputs with a DVM? Any unusual noises or sound from generator or engine? Have you tried connecting a simple load like an incandescent light bulb?

Flashing the field is taking a drill and running it. What is most likely wrong with the OP genset, is either a bad capacitor, diode, or rectifier.

Flashing the feild MAY get it going !
But other thinks could be wrong !
Like a faulty regulator !
I would not recomend an inexperienced person flashing the feild !
There are many dangers, if not done correctily.

See the schematic on page 14

Possibly that resistor symbol in the diode bridge is a heavy duty thermistor that serves as a voltage regulator.

One easy check, with the engine off, is to check that you read an ohm or so across the receptacle slots

Item #6 on pg. 19 seems to be a brush holder so check that the brushes are not excessively worn.

If the manuf. will help us out by supplying voltage/current levels for the excitation coil on pg. 14 then the diode bridge and regulator can be checked.

If not, replace item #6 and hope that it failed for reasons internal to itself. Otherwise the new one will promptly smoke.
