Phone will not hang up--help!

I just ran a phone line from the network interface box (through the attic, through a closet, through a wall) to install a phone jack. I have a DSL and a telephone to run off of that jack. When I plug both in, via a splitter (and the phone is connected to a DSL filter) the phone works 1 time (dial tone and ability to call) but I cannot hang up the phone at all. Even if I hang up and then pick back up 1 minute later, it is as if it did not hang up at all. If I plug the phone directly into the jack without anything else plugged in, it will hang up.

Any ideas?

what kind of wire you used?

Your basic telephone takes only two wire to operate on. That is refered to as the TIP and RING. At you juction box you should have two wire for your phone line. Most of the time it will be black and red. Check this 1st and use a telephone and connect these two wire and insure you have service at the box, and it is working correctly. If yes make sure the wires are good into the house and to your final location watch that in securing the cable no wires are cut into or shorted by the staples you are using to secure them as you install the new wire. Make sure you have the tip and ring at the final terminating point. There should not be any change in the final connection, unless you have shorted a wire.
