You would need to find out what accomplishes the defrosting. Common reasons for defrost failure include:
1. A heating element for that purpose has burned out.
2. A mechanical timer used to switch the heating element on and off (say once for one hour every 12 hours) has stopped running.
A schematic diagram, either in the manual or on the inside of a panel of the unit, would show the defrost mechanism and/or components.
The good conscientious technician or serviceperson will carry extra oils and lubricants in case the new pump did not come with oil or the oil was accidentally spilled, so the service call can be completed without an extra visit.
