Oxidation of BX Wires?
Was having trouble with a switch that was not working (i.e. controlling a Fluorescent fixture) Thinking the switch was defective I attempted to replace it, but when I wired in the replacement switch, it too also did not work.
I removed the switch and attempted to touch the two wires together to see if the fixture would work directly without the switch. Simply touching the two wires should have made a connection. It did not. It was only after touching the tips of the two wires did I get an intermittent connection. Thinking that the wires might be oxidized I tried sanding the ends of the wires, but that too didn't improve the situation, the connection was still intermittent
Further, the switch in question is powered off another adjacent switch by a wire looped through the other switches bottom screw (there are four switches in this gang box)
Would appreciate any assistance on this very weird situation!
You have a couple of different possibilities.
There could be a bad connection at the light fixture.
The cable between the switch and the fixture has a broken wire.
The ballast may be going on the fixture.
The ground has been compromised between the fixture and the switch.
I would start by checking for 120V between hot and neutral at the fixture. Then I would check for 120V between hot and ground at the fixture. If those are both true, then I would suspect a bad ballast.
