Outlet with a switch on top

So this is my new project, i want to have an outlet, with a switch on top and a power outlet on the bottom. But generally the switch would control a light or fan, but i want it to control the outlet on the bottom. My father has been at it but can't figure it out. if anyone can tell me exactly how to do it, or point me where to find it, it would mean so much.

thanks in advance

You should have 2 brass screws on one side, one brass screw and one silver screw on the other. If you want the switch to control the outlet as well, you'll basically hook this up backwards. The side with the brass screw by itself is where you'll hook the line to(constant hot). White on the silver screw and your light on the side with the 2 brass screws.

PS. Don't break the tab between the 2 brass screws

Actually you have to break the tab, in order for the switch to control the outlet. Otherwise, it will not work. The way you hook up, is connect the white to the Silver, then connect a jumper between the switch screw, and the outlet screw. From there, the Black is connected at the switch. These switches come with directions to show you how to do it depending on the configuration that you wish.

Another style:

Gold screw to receptacle and switch.
Gold screw to switch only.
Silver screw (for neutral).

To control the receptacle with the switch connect power to the gold screw for switch only.

To have the receptacle always live and use the switch for something else, connect power to the gold screw for receptacle and switch.,
