outlet installation

Im trying to change a few outlets out in my house but im a little confused...the outlet has silver and gold screws...does it matter if the red goes on the silver or gold? Also, where does the bare wire go?

Do you have other colors?
There should be a white wire also.
Red goes to the gold screw, white goes to the silver screw, and the bare goes to the green screw.

Is this a switched outlet?

I would recommend that you learn more about residential wiring before working on electrical systems. Knowing that the ground is either a bare or green wire is very basic.

Did you remember to turn off the circuit breaker before upgrading the outlets? Hopefully the old ones work well enough to plug in a lamp so that you can confirm that the power is off before you begin. Sometimes lighting fixtures are on circuits separate from the outlets, or different outlets in one room are on separate circuits from each other, so don't make assumptions.

^ operaghost has some SOLID advice here. It's time for some basic education. Look at some how-to websites for re-wiring outlets. Take some pics. Give us your location.

NEVER WORK ON AN ENERGIZED CIRCUIT! If you cannot shut off a breaker or pull a fuse - STOP NOW. for your own safety.
