outdoor panel - extra wide hole

How big a no-no is it to extend a hole in the back of an electric panel? It is an outdoor panel mounted on a piece of wood outside a house. I need to cut the hole a little wider to make something fit. The hole is in the back of the panel. That would mean cutting a little (1-2 inches) beyond the manufacturer knockout.

Maybe you should tell us what "something" is, before asking if it is OK.

I already did it. For a boneheaded reason that I am embarrassed to tell. I did not really need to do it but damage is done.

Should I get a welder from Harbor Freight and try to patch it back up before the inspector sees it or does it not matter?

Welder?? Sounds extreme.

How about using a flat blank plate, fastened with a couple of TEK screws?

Less than $2

in my opinion,if I was the inspector, and you welded the hole,i would make you tear it out and replace panel.beacause you can get KO seals to fix or as KB said.
