Our lights are intermittently flickering

Just started a few days ago. It's all the lights in the house at once. They flicker fairly dramatically for a 2-3 second period. Seems to be random intervals between episodes. What could be causing this? How dangerous is it?

Are the lights on differant circuts, or all on the same breaker?

You may have a loose neutral somewhere

Could this perhaps be due to rats? We've had rats in the attic. Still working on getting them out.

If it's a loose neutral, how long might it take an electrician to diagnose and fix it? How much might it cost?

Dont give rats a bad rap

Probably not due to branch circuit wiring if its all the lights in the house. your utility neutral may have a problem (is it worse when its windy?) this is a very bad situation that can fry your sensistive electronics

call the Power Company ASAP and have them check the outside. If all okay on their end, bring in an electrician to check your panel/service entrance wires

No one can estimate cost. Depends on too many variables. If its a POCO problem it should be free.

could be a number of possibilities and how long it may take can vary depending on how quick the problem can be found, so its hard to put a time on it.

If there on differant circuts I'd be calling the power company to check the power from the pole to the meter base.
If it is there nutural that bad it can wipe out anything that's pluged in at the time. And has been known to cause a fire.

It's not likly rats just happen to eat two differant wires that happen to both control the lights.

.
I second this one---the most likely suspect is out side of your house---

In the mean time unplug anything with a computer chip--microwave--furnace--t.v. ---if it's a neutral problem you could get a power surge on some circuits.

POCO said voltage was fine on their side but he 'repinched' the connection at the pole anyway. So far there hasn't been any flickering since he did that. Hopefully it stays that way....

thanks for the follow up

Wouldnt expect voltage to be wierd except when its flickering. Tightening the connection hopefully solved your problem.

If it happens again, time to call the pro
