Old wiring for a 3 way switch

A friend of mine had taken a light down and didnt code the wires. When I had taken a look at it there seems to be 6 wires running to the light and all are braided 2 are painted white 2 painted red and 2 are black now the light is just a plain light with white, black and the ground. The old light had a fan that was included with this light and was run on a different switch. The light was run on two 3 way switches. My question is what wire goes to what?

You have to identify them as to what they are, So open up the three way switches and find out the travelers, Neutral, and the Switched conductor.

Why were the splices taken apart in the first place? I will never understand the DIY when it comes to changing fixtures.

Haha, I fully agree! Why is it that everyone seems to think they need to disconnect ALL the wires when changing out a light fixture. Just disconnect the 2 for the fixture and if they aren't black and white then mark them! Something about don't fix what isn't broke? Don't disconnect what doesn't need to be?

Apparently the house had some water damage and yes they did say that when they had to replace the drywall they should have replaced the wiring. About taking the light down without thinking first she's blonde what more can I say
