Old House Renovation -- Temporarily cap off ceiling fixture

I'm a newbie for sure. First post. Anyway, I recently purchased a turn of the century fixer upper house which is currently occupied by renters (former owners). I'll move in in a couple of months. There is a chandelier type ceiling fixture in the dining room literally hanging from a thread of wire. All I want to do now is remove the fixture and cap off the wires to make it safe. Major renovations are still being planned and won't begin until the renters (former owners) are out. So, do I have to put in a temp fixture or can I just cap it off, if so, how? It appears as though there's no box or it's under the plaster. Thanks.

You can cap it off, its probably safer than a new fixture.

Thanks. (Of course with power off and double checked) I cut the wire but what do I cap it with?
