Odd ceiling fan behavior

A ceiling fan in one of my bedrooms stopped working. Neither the fan or the light works. It is not controlled by a switch.

I went to lower the fan from the ceiling mount and when I removed the second screw from the right side of the mount and separted the upper mount from the lower and the fan started spinning. When I connected, the fan stopped.

My next step is to cut the power and check the wirenuts. Would the ground wire cause this?

Thanks for any tips.

It's possible there's a loose connection in the junction box the fan hangs from. When you started loosening the screw, the wires moved just enough to re-connect. When you tightened the screw, they separated.

Pull the motor down. Check all the wiring connections.
