New timer not turning

I just purchased a new T101 timer after puchasing a house with a pool and the old timer wasn't working. I thought that the clock in it was bad so I bought a new one. Now when hooking this one up the clock isn't working either.
As far as I can tell I have everything hooked up correctly (per instructions).
I am attaching a couple pics. Hopefully you can follow the wires etc.

Anyone have any idea why it isnt working?

Did you check for incoming power to it?
Also all those wires running into the box need to be pulled and redone with water tite connectors, you can not just stick them in the holes like that.

I see a number of problems in your pictures.

1) The conduits from the sub to the timer and from the timer to the pump aren't connected to the timer enclosure.

2) The neutral is burning up on the left hand side of the neutral bar.

3) Romex isn't allowed to be used outside. I know its in a weather proof panel, but its still considered outside.

4) There is a possibility the UF to the pool pump is wrong as well. The pump would need an insulated ground.

5) A very poor connection of the grounds (if they are connected at all) in the timer.

As for your current problem...
Do you know you have a hot and a neutral to the timer? That would be the first thing I check.

Yes I know there are a number of issues with this wiring. I am planning on re-doing it all shortly. The guy I purchased the house from was a "hack" to say the least. I don't believe in doing things this way but just want to get the timer working in the meantime.


I did forget to mention that the pump works by manually throwing the switch.

And as far as I can tell there is power and neutral going to the timer.

Also any suggestions on how I get this wired correctly would be appreciated.

You need to meter the voltage between the two terminals on the left with a multimeter or wiggy. Those terminals power the clock. Something looks funny with the neutral connection to the clock (the left most terminal).

I get 119.8 on both the neutral and the line on the timer.

How are you determining that the clock isn't working? You do know that the dial turns and not the pointer right?

The only other thing I can suggest is to check those white wires that power the clock. Make sure they are tight and making a good connection.

Yes I do know the dial turns. I don't see any gears turing when looking through the hole. And have waited a while and gone back and checked and the dial is in the same exact spot.

I will check the white clock wires to make sure they are connected good.

OK...now I'm real curious...

What is that single pole 25A breaker in there for? What size wire is going to it?

It also appears that you have a #14 to power the timer on a 20A breaker. You can tell me that this is temp, but I am still going to question it.

Terminal A and terminal 1 need 120 volts for the clock to turn. Are you measuring across terminal A and terminal 1?
If you have 120 volts across (A) and (1). Turn off the power and release the complete mechanism from the box. It pops right out. Check the connections going from (A) and (1). If you have voltage to the clock motor, it can be nothing else but the motor. Since its new, I must assume you have done something wrong.

Note: Did you change out the complete enclosure or only the guts? If you removed the guts from a new timer and installed them into this box, double check that no wires have come loose.
That installation is horrid. It is some of the worst work I have seen. Your problem can easily be diagnosed and fixed. So fix the box installation.
You can remove the guts and connect 120 volts to the timer motor from another source. Like a receptacle. Try that and see if the clock starts to turn. If it turns you have issues with the source outside.

K-buz: That single pole is for a sprinkler pump. I am not sure the size of the wire.


J.V.: Yes I just switched out the guts of the timer with the new one. I will check the timer wires for good connection. But how would I hook it up to a receptacle to test it?

I think this weekend I am going to re-wire everything. So I guess my question is what type and size of wire do I need to be using?
Should I get a single pole breaker and use that instead of the dual pole that is currently in use?
Ultimately there should be no wire nuts right? Everything should be straight to the panel or timer right? I want to fix this mess that the previous owner has made.

just thinking out loud but he said the pump comes on with the manual switch. If the timer is wired inline on the line side of the pump like it should be and it's not working then the pump shouldn't work at all no?

my second question would be how is it a white romex in the subpanel and UF at the timer?

sorry for the triple post
there's a good chance the neutrals burnt due to the fact it looks like that neutral is the return for the 25A breaker.

also the feed wires are way undersized.
