"new switch"

 Hi Gentleman,
#1 ?-I wish to install a light control by a single switch, but not sure how to connect the wires to the switch. is it light first-then switch or the other way around. #2 ?-If I want to use an existing switch-again how the wires get connected, this light is in the garage and I have no switches in the garage. By the way, this is 12ga wire no ground. aha-you wonder why, ok!
there is only two main wires coming into the house from the pole. This home was build in 1957....
Any help would be appreciated.
If you have questions, please ask.
thanks
allen

"new switch"

A normal install would be white, (neutral) to the light, Black, (line) to the switch and then on to the light.
