new light fixture won't work after having worked fine initially

we've installed a new light fixture today. it worked initially after we turned the light on but after staying on for and hour or so, the light went off. it sounded as if the bulb burnt out but we've tried two others and none of them lit up.
we reconnected the three wires several times but it didn't help.
any ideas what could have happened and how to fix it?
thanks!
ps.
there are three wires coming out from the ceiling: black, white, copper. there are also three coming out of the light fixture: white, black and green. we've connected white to white, black to black and copper to green. it is a light with one switch only.

also, we have changed the box from plastic to metal due to the weight of the new fixture. could anything have gone wrong there?

The first thing to do would be to use a volt meter
and check if there is power available at the lamp base.
If there is, then the most likely cause is the lamp is
not making good contact with lamp base.

Bad wire nut connection, or did not use the wire nuts at all.

Hello Analogmusicman, thank you for response - we did check the breaker and it was on. also, we checked the other lights on the same breaker and they are working.

Hello Gregzoll - thanks for your answer - we did use the wire nuts - we tried both the ones that were with the old lamp and the ones that came with the new lamp. what do you mean that there is a bad wire nut connection? that the wires are not "twisted" tight enough? we've tired that but didn't help either... any other ideas?

Hello Dmxtothemax and thanks for your response - I have attached two pictures of the lamp for you to please let me know what you consider a lamp base in this case... would it be where the wires come out of the lamp? forgive my ignorance... thanks!

If the old one was working before you put in the new one, and worked fine, I would say that the problem lies in the installation of the new light fixture. That means, either did not use the wire nuts properly, or even as easy as the bulbs went bad. If the breaker has been cycled as in put to off, then on, and the fixture does not work, then go back where you started, and that is checking the connection point of the new fixture to the wiring.

Gregzoll, again, thanks for your response. the old lamp was working fine, the new one was working fine initially (maybe for an hour or so) and then, out of nowhere, the light went off. at first we thought it was the bulb but we checked two others and they wouldn't come on. also, we connected the wires and put wire nuts on a few times but nothing has changed.
the breaker seems to be working fine because we checked the other lights on the same breaker and they are working
any hint will be appreciated.
thanks!

Hint, redo the wire nuts properly, so you have a good firm connection, and the wires do not pull out. I would say the best thing to do at this point, is call an electrician, because as you stated, the other lights work, but this one does not, and checked the wire nuts.

Don't rule out a problem with the new fixture. Is there some way you could remount the old fixture?

if you know how to use an "ohm-meter" and you've got one (mine's a cheapo from "radio shack"),simply put one probe on the black lamp wire and the other probe on the center tab at the bottom of the light socket,it should read 0 ohms (should be a dead short) repeat that procedure for the white lamp wire to the screw base of the lamp socket, it should also read 0 ohms. I'm thinking that a wire came loose inside the lamp.

ps: if you don't have a VOM,you may be well advised to buy one at RS since you'll have the satisfaction of fixing this yourself and you'll learn how to use one. most people here can give you precise instructions on using one.

tnx,
