New light fixture - no white wires

I'm finding so much vague information about this situation, nothing concrete anywhere.

Fixture has two black wires (actually two black wires connected together to make one cord but you can split them apart) and a ground on the fixture bar.

House is old so from the ceiling there are two white wires and two black wires, no green. The instructions for the light fixture are horrible, it says connect the light fixture to the "main" wire. That's it. OK great, but there are two black wires from the ceiling - do I connect the two ceiling blacks to the two light fixture blacks and cap off the whites in the ceiling?

If so, is there no risk to being shocked if you touch the socket when you change a bulb?

The side of the cord with the ridges is the white. The other is the black.
