new to DIY- electric project for pool area
 
Good morning- New to DIY and very excited to find it, as I love jazz of project completion and money savings.

I have lived on the edge too long with 100' extension cord from GFI on porch to pool pump. Pretty dumb- always on to do list.

Want to run line 70' (25 under ground) directly from panel to waterproof junction box, one line to pump 1.5 hp ,12 amp, 115. and another line to outlet for small refridge and flood light on small pool house.

12/2 or 14/2 wire- should it be in conduit for the 25' run underground and how deep?. how high does junction box need to be above ground on deck?

Can't wait to do this one!

Typically, I would install 3/4" PVC conduit underground and pull individual THHW conductors instead of cable (#12....2 blacks, 2 whites and one green)

12" deep if the GFCI protection is at the panel, otherwise 18" deep.

Use logic and common sense for JB height.

I gotta say, a pool are is NOT the place to start your DIY experience.
Are you aware of all the codes in involved with doing wiring for a pool?

- The receptacle for the pump can be 5'-10' from the pool wall. NO closer.
- The cord on the pump MUST be at least #12 and cannot be longer than 3'.
- If the pump receptacle is that close it MUST be a twist-lock type and fed from a GFI breaker or remote faceless GFI device. NO other receptacles are allowed this close to the pool.
- A pump that big MUST be on it's own circuit.
- The outdoor wiring to a pool pump MUST be in conduit and have an insulated ground.
- There MUST be another GFI protected standard receptacle between 10'-20' from the pool.
- The pump motor must be bonded with a #8 solid cu bond wire to any metallic objects related to the pool, including the pool wall/structure, heaters, etc, or any large metallic objects within 5' of the pool including fences, awnings, railings, etc.

And there is even more. Are you ready/experienced enough for all this?

Look up NEC article 680. You will see what Speedy is talking about. You can Google it and read it for free.

Otherwise if the Art 680 is too much for you.

You can call the electrician to come in and do this for you { due some electricians are famuair and some are not famuair with Art 680 and this is a very strict part and there is no margin of error on this one }

I allready done two so far this year and Allready done 5 in France { that diffrent story with the codes :eek:}

Speedy Pete is right on the target what the requirement is and you need to read this very carefull on this matter.

Some jurisdictions (such as Delaware) do not allow DIY pool wiring. There is a reason for this, as outlined earlier in this thread. Bad wiring can be deadly -- especially so when dealing with swimming pools. :furious:
