New or changed wiring? Protect your about-to-be-installed switch/CB with. . .

a 100w incand. bulb wired in series with the sw/CB.

Substitute this assembly for the sw/CB and measure the voltage across the assembly with the sw/CB open and then closed.

If the difference in voltage is less 0.24 vac [e.g., 120.00 vac drops to 119.76 vac or more] the sw/CB is looking into a dead short and will conduct more than 400 A.

If the difference in voltage is more than 6.4 vac [120.0 drops to 113.6 or less] the sw/CB will conduct less than 15 A.
