New Ceiling fixture Wiring Question

Hello,

I am repalcing a fixture in my kitchen which was previously a ceiling fan. The new fixture is just a standard light. I have replaced fixtures numerous times with no issues but I am running into one here. The supply coming out of the ceiling has black (3 twisted together), white(3 twisted together) and a single red wire(never encountered a red wire before). The new fixture just has black and white, it looks like the previous ceiling fan had the red and black twisted together. I connected the new fixture, white from the fixture to the 3 white in the supply, black from the fixture to the 3 black and 1 red in the ceiling. The fixture powers on but the problem is that it stays on and the switch doesnt do anything when you flip it on or off.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

Tie the 3 black wires together, tie the white wires to the white from the light, tie the red wire to the black wire from the light fixture.

Great thanks, I will give that a try tonight.

That's the winner. The red is the switched hot. The blacks are constant hot, carrying power through to something else.
