new cable in attic

When adding a new cable through the attic, about a 12' run for a lighting circuit, I believe that I do not need to staple it to the joists as with new construction, so a) would like to confirm that, and b) is it preferred to lay the cable on top of the insulation, or run it under the insulation, directly on top of the drywall? And I may still roll back the top layer of rolled fiberglass, and staple it to the joist, but it's tight, so just thinking ahead to my options.

It needs to be stapled, it should not be run over the insulation where someone could step on it.
Run it along side of the joist, though drilled holes in the joist, or stapled to 2, 2 X 4's nailed together in an L shape to protect the wire.

Thanks, Joe. Yeah, was thinking about it more after I hit the send button or whatever, and decided, nope, it's an attic, not a wall cavity, so no way around it. Aw well, only about 12' of it, so will get down on my belly and get to it, once it warms up a few more degrees.

Only needs to be stapled to the top of the joist unless within six feet of the opening where it needs protection from damage.
