New Bedroom ACFI - Portable A/C keeps tripping breaker

I recently had electrical put up in the upstairs of my house. In two bedrooms I have 20A AFCI circuits. I have Haier 10k BTU portable A/C (CPN10XH9) and seemingly randomly the break trips, usually after a few hours of it being on. From the specs I've found it seems like unit draws about 1000W.

I've also noticed it happens when I have the door open and it is attempting to cool 3 rooms, admittedly a little too much for one unit. Could this cause it to trip? I would think it holds to logic that if the unit only draws 1000w it wouldn't be able to trip the breaker, even running constantly. Am I wrong? I have another unit on order and I'm nervous the same thing is going to happen on the other bedroom.

I'm leaving it on tonight with the door closed to see if it trips.

Modern afci's are combination devices. They are pretty much fool proof. It sounds like you are getting an arc from a loose connection. I'd have an electrician check connections. The one I would most suspect is the wire connection to the afci breaker. The a/c pulls a higher current and this could be causing an arc when it cycles at a loose connection. The afci eventually trips when the arc signature exceeds limits.

Has the breaker ever tripped when the fan and (or) lights were in the OFF position.

I had a similar problem with a GFCI receptacle a few years back. The receptacle was wired into bathroom cct...... a new receptacle, new bath fan, new wiring and new 15 amp breaker. However, 2/ 5 times we found that the GFCI would trip only AFTER we shut the fan OFF. It was the wierdest thing.... I checked switches swapped the GFCI (thinking it was defective right from the manufacturer) and replaced fan motor with a new one....same prob.

Turns out if it was the cheap plastic clip from the fan that was causing the problem. The design of the harness on both fans (which were the same models) did not FULLY clip into the fan motor harness causing the smallest arc when shutting off therefor tripping the GFCI. I simply cut the harnesses and hardwired and never had a problem since.

LONG STORY SHORT........ might be a slight arc somewhere (at breaker panel like STUBBIE mentioned) or even at ur fan/lights. Try to make note of when it trips (is the fan/light on or off). If there is a slight arc it could just be coming from there.......who knows.

keep us posted............Good Luck !!!

I'll try it with the fan/lights off, see what happens.
