New Basement Bathroom / Laundry Room Electrical Circuit(s)
I am building a new basement bathroom/laundry room and looking for guidance on the electrical component of the project. I have some basic electrical skills and I am reasonably comfortable working with electrical devices (ie. installing, removing, small additions to existing lines, etc) and always work cautiously around electrical with safety as the top priority. That being said, I am DIY guy, not a licensed electrician, and due to scope of this project and the working within the constraints of the existing electrical in my home, this is a project I am seeking feedback on to help ensure it’s done safely and within local code.
Current Situation
- Home located in southern Ontario, Canada. Built in 1960’s. All existing electrical is copper wiring.
- Basement ‘backroom’ was a wide open space previously only used for laundry room that I’ve framed to now be a bathroom, laundry room and small closet.
- Electrical panel utilizes older style fuses with twin single pole fuse heads (ie. One black wire on one side of fuse head to feed a circuit, and another black wire on opposite side of fuse head to feed a separate circuit).
- I have removed a small amount of basement wiring that leaves one side of a 15-amp fuse head unused. There are also two open slots that can be utilized if recommended (I can buy and install fuse heads).
Project Requirements
Planning to install the following devices:
- 15-Amp GFCI Receptacle (laundry room by wash basin)
- 120-volt receptacle (mainly to be used for clothes washer)
- 15-Amp GFCI Receptacle (bathroom sink)
- Bathroom Fan with switch
- Bathroom Lighting (4-inch pot light and vanity lighting) with switch
- Closet light with switch
Project Assumptions
- Will use 12-gauge wire for all of this new wiring to ensure it easily meets current/future code .
- Will run all these devices on one circuit as tying into other existing circuits not reasonable due to existing wiring layout / usage. Can run separate circuits directly from panel if necessary.
- Will utilize the one side of the existing fuse head that has been ‘freed up’ by removing previous wiring.
Any feedback appreciated. Reminder that I live in Ontario, Canada, as I can see that U.S. has different code that I would do not believe I would meet with this configuration.

No reason for 12 gauge if 15 amp circuits. Waste of money and too hard to work with compared to 14 gauge.
Lights must be on 15 amp circuits.
Laundry area must have one circuit dedicated only to the laundry receptacles.
Maximum 12 outlets(receptacles, lights, fans, etc) on each circuit. Switches do not count as outlets.

There is no drawing present.

I'll run separate circuit for laundry room. And use 14 gauge instead of 12.

The OP doesn't say where he is, but that limitation is a Canadian thing. No such limit in U.S. code.
