I am going to install a bathroom fan, where none exsists now,I will have to install a new 110v service, the house is in Virginia ,the question any short cuts to get the service to the attic, are there fire breaks in the walls the house is a cape cod style, the service is in the basement the bathroom is two floors up thank you
No shortcuts, just work. There is probably only one set of fireblocking in the wall, a couple feet below the top. So, you'll need to penetrate the sill plate, the fireblocking, and the header. You can just drill through the sill plate and header with a decent sized bit (3/4" at least). Then poke something flexible down there to see how far down the fireblocking is. If you can, reach it and drill through it with a long flexible drill bit (there are many products that will do this). Then carefully feed a fish tape down through the holes. Using a magnet on a rod up through the hole in the sill plate will help snag the steel tape and pull it through into the basement.
This is a hard fishing job. Fishing wire is hard enough without fireblocking. In a few instances, I've had to open the drywall at the fireblocking to drill it and feed the cable through.
Easy way, come off of the GFCI for the bathroom, then from the fan junction, pull a lead for the switch, which you will have to try to fish down the wall where the current existing light switch is. It is easier if you are able to do it while the Gypsum board is down, or able to cut the gypsum board in a couple spots to help pull the wire down.
