Question

NEMA 14 Generator to NEMA 6 pump wiring

Hi guys,

I've got a generator I'd like to hook up to a sump pump. The sump pump is 240V and comes with a NEMA 6-15 plug. The generator provides 240/120V (30A) output via a NEMA 14 Plug and 4 wire cable.

I've purchased 12-4 cable and the appropriate connectors to build a patch cord. I just wanted to confirm the wiring. I'm assuming

1. Connect ground to ground
2. Connect the hots (red to red and black to black)
3. Cap off the neutral (don't use it)

Is this correct? I've read some posts about binding the ground and neutral, why would you do that?

Thanks,

Chris

There is no neutral conductor connection in the NEMA 6-15 configuration.

Hence the 240v designation?

Yes.

You could use 12-2 cable with ground for the patch cord. Leave the neutral unconnected.
