neew light switch... on is ok(ish), off flips breaker

I put in a new light and switch, (i'm not a pro but done it loads of times before), and now none of the lights on that breaker work.
Turn breaker on just turns itself off now.
Have put the original lighting setup back in, and still nothing.
Does this mean I have a short?
Please be gentle with me.

Can you tell us a little more about the situation?...Is it a 3 way set-up. Did you accidently attach the white wire to the switch....(do they have white wires in England?...lol). Did you mistakenly buy a 3 way switch?

errr... about the white wires...no.
red/brown is live.
green/yellow is earth and blue is the other one.

the switch was a dimmer switch, i think it did have L1 and L2

would that make a difference?

With blue being the "other one" I'm guessing that means neutral. That should not be connected to a light switch. Only the "live" or "hot, and then the same color running to the fixture...

Another question....

When you take the switch out of the box completely....how many wires (romex cables) are entering the box from the back?..

If it is just one bundle or one romex with 2 conductors + a ground, then my advice regarding the white wires is not valid...if there are 2 or more, then only the "live" colored wires should be connected to the switch. I'm not an electrician so my lingo may not be right, but if I saw a pic, I could tell you which wires go where...lol

sounds like it's a 2 pole switch. you need to find the two hots that are coming in and make sure you have them on the right screws. Sounds like you have a loop going. power into power, not power into switch leg...understand what I am saying?
