Need Wiring Advice

Hey guys,

I'm a total newbie here just looking for some advice on how replace a hideous wall sconce with a flush mount ceiling fixture. Note:Attic has plenty of crawl space...if that matters.

Just need some direction on what to buy and how to go about replacing the wall sconce with a new ceiling fixture. ANY insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Is there an electrical box in the wall?? Besides protecting combustible surfaces in the event of a spark, it often was the support for the lighting fixture. If the house is old, you may just have a wire coming thru the wall and the fixture is the box. That may be OK in some areas, but I prefer to see the wire terminate in a box. Most modern fixtures are designed to mount to a wall electical box.
