Need tutorial on wiring new switch to light.

I want to put a new light at the bottom of my stairs.

I have a junction box in the basement with a wire in it that powers outlets on the first floor. I'd like to run a new wire from this junction box to the pole switch to the light.

Does anyone have a tutorial on how to do this starting from the junction box?

Here is power into the switch location then onto the light.

NOTE: ground wires not show for ease of drawing

Here is how you would grab power from the location of a receptacle.

Excellent thank-you and how will they look in the junction box, at the moment there is one wire into it and a wire going out?

The connections in the J-Box Will look like the diagram in post 3 with the receptacle removed. In the existing j-box you say there are two cables. Are the blacks of the cable connected together. And the whites?

Yes the blacks and whites are together. So I take the nut off the two blacks and add the third light switch black and put the nut back on the 3 blacks and do the same with the 2 whites making 3 whites?

*I recently posted some photos on my web site depicting the installation of a dimmer switch and a new ceiling light fixture. It is probably not exactly what you are dealing with, but you might get some useful tips.

You may find that an old work fan brace and box will fit into the ceiling space between two joists nicely.
