Need help with this diagram


I updated an outlet but I do not remember how it was wired. That facts:

1) two wires were nutted and stuffed in behind the outlet.
2) three wires were connected to the outlet

Can you help pair the wires?

Wire the two white wires together, then take a short piece from them to the silver screw on the receptacle. Wire the two blacks together and pigtail to one of the brass screws. Break the tab between the brass screws and connect the red to the other.

hi inphase, the old outlet did not have any pigtails nor was the tab broken but i'll give it a shot. thanks

If what inphase suggested does not work check voltage on the wires and re post.

That's because before the whole outlet was switched. The way Inphase told you will only switch half, which IMO is better. How often will you have TWO lamps plugged in? Now at least you have use of the other receptacle.
