need to find wall switch remote..does that exist?

Maybe this is the wrong forum, but I figured an electrician might know…..

I have an older relative who doesn’t get around well. They want me to install a remote to their overhead light in Master Bedroom. That is, be able to control the wall switch remotely.

They already have one of these in another room. It is a switch that replaces the original wall switch so it can operate manually (normally), but adds a second switch you can mount across the room. The prodict is old, but surely it still exists. No kind of marking I can find as to manaufacturer.

I went to Lowes…HD….no one can help. They can offer $35-50 ceiling fan remotes…but that’s overkill…its one little light. This isn’t a “smart house” and I am not trying to fry an egg or fix a latte from the bedroom…just kill the overhead light so Granny doesn’t have to get out of bed

Any suggestions what this product is called and or where to find one?

Thanks.

THB

need to find wall switch remote..does that exist?

ok, first off, the switches are just switches with a runner so both switches control the light from different locations. we have the same thing in our living room. but....your best/easiest bet is to get a "clapper" unit and plug in a lamp to it. i've not seen a handheld battery remote for a light switch before, not to say someone doesn't make/sell them however, i've just never seen one.

hope this helps!

I think Levitron has some switches like this. Check out their website.

well whattaya know, Leviton DOES make them, (LevitRon is a magnet toy) i called the 800# and asked them about it, ya got me curious...but for quick and cheap, the clapper is still the easiest way to go IMHO. here's a link: http://www.levitonproducts.com/catal...8BC74&pid=1208

I have installed a 'remote 3 way' before. You replace the existing single pole switch with their 'receiver switch'...wires in just like a regular single pole switch. The 'transmitter switch' requires a box to mount it in, and runs off a battery (I think it was a 9 volt). I just took a metal handybox, mounted it to the wall where they wanted it, and installed the 'trnsmtr sw'. No conduit or hard wiring required. I can't remember the exact brand name or anything, and it was bought at Menard's. Menard's is like HD & Lowe's, but they only have stores in the midwest. I don't know if they still carry them or not.

You might ask some of your local electrical supply or lighting stores. Check Wal-mart or Sears type stores too.
Doesn't surprise me about HD or Lowe's. 10% of them can't even find their own parking lot.

Look at X 10 technology. Google " X 10 " and you will find a number of sites. You will need a remote, a transceiver and a switch module. You can add up to 10 diffrent modules per transceiver for various functions. The 3 items should cost less than $40. You can get them even cheaper on Ebay.

This isn’t a “smart house” .... As long as we're on the subject of smart homes.... http://www.smarthome.com/_/Dimmers_L...D/2MD/nav.aspx Start at the smarthome web site. That should put you in the right direction. pete
