Need advice installing outdoor lights

I'll be installing 4 outdoor wall lights on the exterior garage front. The wall is brick. I'm thinking I'll need to drill out a cutout in the brick to accommodate a fixture box to attach the light to.--Is that the way these installs are done? If so, I assume a hammer drill should do the trick? How heavy duty of a drill would I need and are there any "tricks" you guys might have to efficiently make this cut in the brick?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Personally, I would probably just install a fixture block (aka piece of ceder with a 4" round hole for a pancake box) to the brick and just drill 1 hole through the brick for the wiring method of your choice.

I'd try to surface mount a pancake box (1/2 deep) if the fixture design (canopy depth) will allow it.

If not, bump it out like Chris suggested. It will be easier then chipping out brick.

If you MUST chip out the brick, use a 1 gang box (rectangle) and cut the sides with a diamond blade on a grinder. The height of the 1G box is about the same as a brick.

Some people would suggest that, since it is brick and can not catch fire under any circumstances, that you can simply skip the J box and make up the wires in the canopy portion of the fixture. I believe that code requires a jbox even if it is mounted to concrete covered with asbestos.
