NEC- National Electric code 2008


That means it applies to the entire country
Permits & Inspections are usually required for ALL electric work
It may not be legal for you to do your own work, Check with your local Building Dept
This thread will be added onto as a form of "Cliff Notes" for the NEC

New Code book comes out every 3 years, it is not always fully accepted by States & sometimes not until 1-2 years later
Local codes can vary from the NEC

210.23 An individual branch circuit shall be permitted to supply any load for which it is rated (some think you can only load to 80%)

210.50 Required Branch circuits
14g wire is rated for 15a, 12g wire is rated for 20a
15a outlets ONLY on a 15a circuit
15a/20a are allowed on a 20a circuit
A single 15a receptacle is not allowed on a 20a circuit
AFCI protection is required almost every where under NEC 2008
Exceptions are GFCI required: bathrooms, kitchens, laundry (GFCI if sink within 6' of receptacle), garage & outside circuits

Bathroom requires a dedicated 20a GFCI protected circuit that can serve outlets in multiple bathrooms
OR
Outlets & Lights in One bathroom

Kitchen requires 2 dedicated 20a GFCI protected circuits for counter (no lights)

Laundry area requires a dedicated 20a GFCI protected circuit

NEC- National Electric code 2008


Sub-panels:
Under NEC Code require 4 feeds: 2 hots, neutral & an insulated green ground
#6 & Under must be the correct color: White neutral, (usually) green ground - refer to 200.6 for options

Detached structure requires grounding rods connected with #6 Min

See 310.16 for wire sizing
Wire running underground must be rated for wet use, such as UF or THWN (in conduit)

Kitchen wiring

210.52 Required Branch circuits

Keep in mind that the NEC is the MINIMUM standards you must meet
In many cases it is MUCH better to exceed the code, especially in the kitchen where a lot of power hungry devices are used

(Each) Kitchen requires 2 dedicated 20a GFCI protected circuits for counter (no lights)
These shall be located no more then 20" above the countertop

Refridgerator - Good idea to have this on a dedicated 15/20a circuit, not required

Dishwasher - requires dedicated circuit, these can pull 12a or more
---garbage disposal can be on this circuit

Over the stove Microwave - many Mfg's require a dedicated circuit, if more then 50% of the circuit it requires a dedicated ciruit (210.23).
Local codes or Inspector may require a dedicated circuit
It makes sense to have a dedicated circuit for the MW & fan hood

Range hood requires a dedicated circuit if cord & plug (422.16)
--seems to be required now so that if a combo MW/Hood is installed there will be enough power

220.14 (D) Luminaires. An outlet supplying luminaire(s) shall be calculated based on the maximum volt-ampere rating of the equipment and lamps for which the luminaire(s) is rated.




NEC 410.16



NEC 410.8 (2005) is now 410.16 under NEC 2008

(B) Luminaire (Fixture) Types Permitted. Listed luminaires
(fixtures) of the following types shall be permitted to
be installed in a closet:
(1) A surface-mounted or recessed incandescent luminaire
(fixture) with a completely enclosed lamp
(2) A surface-mounted or recessed fluorescent luminaire
(fixture)

(D) Location. Luminaires (fixtures) in clothes closets shall
be permitted to be installed as follows:
(1) Surface-mounted incandescent luminaires (fixtures) installed
on the wall above the door or on the ceiling,
provided there is a minimum clearance of 300 mm
(12 in.) between the luminaire (fixture) and the nearest
point of a storage space
(2) Surface-mounted fluorescent luminaires (fixtures) installed
on the wall above the door or on the ceiling,
provided there is a minimum clearance of 150 mm
(6 in.) between the luminaire (fixture) and the nearest
point of a storage space
(3) Recessed incandescent luminaires (fixtures) with a completely
enclosed lamp installed in the wall or the ceiling,
provided there is a minimum clearance of 150 mm (6 in.)
between the luminaire (fixture) and the nearest point of a
storage space
(4) Recessed fluorescent luminaires (fixtures) installed in
the wall or the ceiling, provided there is a minimum
clearance of 150 mm (6 in.) between the luminaire
(fixture) and the nearest point of a storage space
410.9 Space for Cove Lighting. Coves shall have adequate
space and shall be located so that lamps and equipment
can be properly installed and maintained.

1 conductor/cable Max conduit fill is 53%

Pool & Spa Installations

Read section 680 for requirement
Section 680.26 for required Bonding grid around the pool/spa

680.22 requires a 15a or 20a GFCI protected circuit between 6' & 20' of the pool for general use
