Mystery Light Switch

In our mudroom is a double gang box with two switches. They are both 3-way switches. One controls the light in the room (and another switch in the garage controls this same light) but the other one has been a mystery ever since we've owned the home. The mystery switch is bigger than regular 3-way switch and says "SPEC GRADE" on it.

In the garage switch box (which has the second switch for the mudroom and a garage switch) there is another switch just like the mystery one that controls the garage lights. This is also 3-way because another switch by the outside door turns these same lights on.

So what gives? What is a Spec Grade switch? Also, what is the easiest way for me trace the mystery switch? What may it likely control? The house was built in the late 80s. Thanks!

Mystery Light Switch

Spec Grade is a higher quality of device than the bulk bin versions.

Do you have outside lights that the switch may control?

Mystery Light Switch

I have looked and nothing comes on when I flip the switch. It is also 3-way so it leads me to believe that it MAY control the garage light (makes sense) and is not connected properly. Any other ideas?

Mystery Light Switch

SOLVED: Just redid the connections and it does, in fact, control a set of outdoor floodlights. Thanks!
