mystery electrical switch

Well, I still haven't figured out what the mysterious switch does but I though that while I'm at it I would add a receptacle. So for those of you who are getting a kick out of this thread you will definitely love this. So I pick a spot on the wall where I need a receptacle and found it weird that there wasn't one in this spot when the house was built. Anyway when I got up close to this spot it look like it had been patched over. So I cut a hole and valla! A box with live wires in it. 2 whites and 2 blacks no reds. I'll have to put in a receptacle and see if the mysterious switch has anything to do with it.

I thank everyone for there replies. It's given me a some ideas on what the mysterious switch could be for. I will post as I progress.

mystery electrical switch

Turns out the receptacle closest to the mysterious switch didn't have the tab broken off. Brook it of and the split receptacle works like a charm.

One other thing. Where I found the receptacle hidden in the wall, I cut more of the awful patch and found a coaxial box with a cable in it which is great because both are going behind the tv. Just have to connect the cable in the basement and I'm done.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Hey, my house does that!

I've had a few "mysterious" lights-on events over the years too... Things are much improved since I went to UPB, but I recently did have to track down a glitch where my son's b/r light came on at 5:05AM every day. Thankfully, he sleeps like a log but the light woke me up every day. Turned out that I fat-fingered a schedule entry so I only had my own self to blame.
