my idea for a handcrafted light fixture - need feedback

I figured why not? I'm already doing custom-fit cabinets to save money. Crafting a light fixture for the kitchen likely won't be harder than that.

The plan is simple: instead of buying 15 x 50 rectangular fluorescent light fixtures (equally 3 in total which would cost $350.00) - I will make my own ceiling-hugging rectangular fixtures and this way they will match my kitchen cabinets.

The design is simple: make a box-like frame which is built to the ceiling. On the inside I'd run wood slats (like you would have in a box-spring mattress frame) and use these slats for support of individual light sockets.

For the glass cover - a simple but nice looking 'window pane' looking unit that latches into place with decorative door-latches (maybe even hinged on one side for easy-open replacement of bulbs) . . . this would be constructed with a basic wood frame - and a few individual sheets of frosted glass which would be siliconed into place from the inside.

Times three - what's that, $90.00 for all necessary materials (wire, sockets, framework, glass)

Or is this idea just stupid?

Well then that makes it simple - I'll just craft a decorative shade housing for existing fluorescent units that I do have - less work.

Learn something every day....but makes sense....

But then again, my time is worth more than the time it takes to build something like that....hence I wouldn't try.

On a personal note....I'm a big fan of can lights. There is a much bigger selection of bulbs out there in both color and output. A 4' T8 comes in one size output...the only options are color.

Haha - time is one thing I have plenty of.

The military gave us orders to move in October - so I withdrew from my semester to fix up the house so we could rent upon relocation. Then they canceled the orders and so now I just need to finish the work I've started.
