You need to check the wiring, testing for the proper voltage (120 volts for lights, ordinary receptacles), testing between hot and neutral. The air conditioner circuit nees to mearusure 240 volts between the two hot wires.
Start at the breaker and work along the circuit in case you run into loose connections where the circuit wire goes into an outlet box and then continues on to another outlet box or switch.
