Move and add light to a three way

I was hoping someone could help me with this. I have a three way for my stairwell with one light fixture. We want to get rid of the existing chandelier type fixture and replace it with two wall sconces, so I'm both moving and adding a fixture. To do that, can I put a junction box at the exisiting fixture location (it's accessible from the attic) so that the switch wiring is unaffected, then take 14/2 and extend the white/black/ground wires (that are currently connected to the light fixture) from my new junction box to the first new sconce and from there to the second new sconce? Would that work? Is there a better way? Thanks. This site is awesome for the DIYer!

Your described method will work perfectly.

Options:

Run 2 wires from you junction box (old ceiling fixture box), one to each sconce.

Pull the junction box out of the ceiling but leave accessible in the attic. That way you can patch the ceiling and not have a blank cover on the ceiling.
