mounting fixture to light box without ceiling

This has to have been addressed before but I couldn't search it out. I've got open joists with conduit running to octagonal light boxes. I've been using basic ceramic fixtures which fit nice and tight to the boxes but I want to put some decorative lighting in places and these all have mounting bases that are designed to press flush to a ceiling. Do I need to cut custom pieces of wood just larger than the light fixtures mount and use that in between the fixture and the electrical box or is there a commercial product that will do the job? I've even looked into round metal such as unused quart paint can lids with a hole cut in the middle for wiring to pass that could be used in between the box and the fixture. I hope this is clear enough. Thanks.

Most ceiling mount fixtures have a base that are larger than the box, then the globe attaches to the fixture.
I don't see a need for anything other than the fixture.

But the box often ends up fitting inside the fixture somewhat and is often difficult to get tight or doesn't fit flush. Also this leaves a large gap that is open to dust and bugs.

You need something to "mimic" the ceiling.

An round or square piece of sheetrock or plywood or paneling or sheetmetal or just about anything will accomplish this. All it has to be is slightly larger than the fixture base. Making it attractive is the only hard part.

get a ceiling medallion, just a cheapy at one of the big box stores, turn in upside down and use the flat surface to support the fixture.

something like this

Thanks. Not a bad idea. Can't find one at Lowes smaller than 10" in diameter though, and that's a bit large. But I'll keep looking. I've actually used small plastic plates in the past, but they are tough to drill through without cracking.
