Motor runs after assistance

My ceiling fan motor only runs when I help turn it otherwise it will not run when power is on. Could the wiring have a short, the unit is about 9 years old.

Most likely it is a problem with the fan. Probably the capacitor inside. My experience has been that it is cheaper to buy a new fan than a new capacitor.

Replace the start capacitor !
it will be under the motor hood.
Make real sure you use the correct replacement !
Do not use substitutes !

Motors should be started on high speed and then reduced. What speed are you starting yours on?

If it's a capacitor start motor [half round cover on the outside of the motor], that is probably the issue. Caps can be had for around four bucks from the supply house or HVAC supply. Get close to the same specification cap.

If anything other than that, new fan is probably cheaper.
