The most basic question on this forum

Can someone instruct me how to get my new flush light installed?

I have a bundle of black wires, a bundle of white wires and one red wire coming from the ceiling. I only have a black and white wire coming from the new fixture.

The light is only connected to one light switch.

Do I just remove the caps and connect the black wire to the black bundle and do the same for the white then cap the red?

Thanks.

Also, I need a book on home electrical, any recommendations. I need something that starts with basics - obviously.

Best guess would be black from fixture goes to red, white from fixture goes to the bundle of whites with a proper wire nut.

No, there was not a cap on the neutrals which is why I stopped what I was doing and just thought I would post a question somewhere. The first flush light and fan I changed were simple and straight forward. One black, one white. This one just had the bundles. I am a new home owner of 10 days now so I am extremely out of my element if it isn't color coded correctly for me. I put caps on everything and just left it for now until I could figure out what to do.

I'll give what the first response suggested when I get home.

Is there a special way to get the buchannon crimp off? I assume I want to replace anything that looks like that with a new wire nut - do I need to also then tape the nuts on with electrical tape?

Thanks for the help.

When you remove a fixture pay attention to how the existing fixture is terminated. Generally install the new one same as old. Cut the wires near the crimp, restrip the insulation, reconnect with wire nuts. I recommend pre-twisting the wires.

Yeah, I did that for the last fixture (took a quick picture of the wires before removing the fixture) but for some reason I didn't for this one.

Problem fixed -- I did just cut and strip back the neutral bunch and joined them all with the same nut. Fastened the red from the ceiling to the black on the fixture. All is well again.

Thank you everyone for your quick help!

What I want to know is, what is a Flush light. As for mounting a fan to that box, it may work, since that type of box is secured between the rafters, but you need to get those Buchanon caps off and use regular wire nuts. As for wiring the fan, you will have to either use a remote to turn off and on the fan & light, or without the remote, you will have to reach up and pull the chains.
