minimum impact switchbox
I'm adding an outlet or two to my garage for my new workshop. The garage was finished by a former owner, who evidently didn't need more than the measly one 15a outlet. I have easy access to the top of the wall so can drop down the cable.

Just wondering if there is a switchbox available that secures from inside the box so I can limit my wall-cutting to just enough to get the switchbox through the hole?

Also, I'll be adding a dedicated circuit for these outlets. Do I need a permit before or an inspection after completion?

Yeah, there are all kinds of boxes. I like using the ones with interior clamps 'cos I do renovations and it makes life easier for the next guy. You can get them where they have the ability to simply attach to the drywall, if you need to put one where there isn't a stud right there too.
I don't know about permits in your area, but I would assume you need a permit before and an inspection after. Good luck.

Can you tell me where to get them. Can't find listed at Home Depot or Lowe's.

Are you coming down inside the walls or on the outside of the sheetrock? Bouns is talking about old work boxes. They come in single and double gang. They have 2 ears that tighten against the sheetrock from the back side. They have them at Lowes, HD, hardware stores.

I use them all of the time, they have little 'ears' that swing out and secure them to the drywall.

An older wall, with firestops, can really challenge the installation.
