Metal Conduits for grounding my outlets?
How can I verify if my home (1956 So California house) has grounded metal conduits?
Do self grounding outlets only work when their is grounded conduits? And what makes them self grounding, do they just come with a little wire? Link Leviton Self Grounding outlet at Homedepot Thanks for your help! |

Metal Conduits for grounding my outlets?
self grounding receps are grounded through the mounting screw. That recep doesn't look like any self grounding recep I have ever used.
http://www.onlineelectricsupply.com/...x15a125vla.jpgNotice the brass piece on the lower screw? That is what makes this device self grounding. Some use a little spring retainer instead of the stamped metal. Basically, the point is; the device must be tested and listed to ground through the screw. With a standard (non self grounding) device, if you do not screw the device down tight, the screw is loose in it's hole and does not make good enough contact to be considered self grounding. With the metal or spring retainer, there is a constant contact so even if the device is not screwed down tightly, the screw still makes adequate contact with the device to ground it. If your house has conduit (metal conduit), as long as it is attached to the box and the panel, it is grounded by virtue of those points of contact. |
