what is the maximum number of gauge 14 wires that can be spliced together?

Depends on the size of the wire nut or connector you are using.

well that can easily be upgraded on an as needed basis. but i thought that because it is harder to splice more wire there could be a legal maximum. you may think i am a clutsy retard but 4 wire splicing exhausts my pliers dexterity...

When you buy wire nuts, the package will list how many wires, either all the same size or a mix of sizes, that can be spliced using that size nut. Where does the pliers come into play? Are you having problems with just 4 #14s?
