Advantages of replacing them:

1. You'll probably see that your original receptacles are back-stabbed and now you can wire them right.

2. You can upgrade to spec-grade receptacles. The extra cost is nothing compared to the cost of labor.

3. You can put 20A receptacles on 20A circuits to get a visual indicator of the higher-capacity circuit.

4. You can put in receptacles that match your current decor better and get rid of ones that had been painted over.

5. When you do a project like this, you understand your own house's wiring better, you may find defects, and you can label your circuits more accurately.

Just be sure the power is off before you change them. Reading Rex Cauldwell's book, Wiring a House, was very informative.

Had a house built in '73 I bought and occupied it in '95. EVERY accessible outlet was trashed on the inside...not sure what the previous HO did...but there wasn't one that would hold a plug securely.

So should they be replaced? Yes, if they have issues...on an interval...no IMHO.

He also wrote books on house inspection and plumbing; definitely, he is a detail person.
