Low voltage code

Hi, I wanted to know what are the rules for wiring low voltage?

I am using a plug in transformer to get 12VDC and then running the low voltage wires to Low Voltage MR16 recessed halogen housings. I know some guidelines to wire gauges from working on cars, but what are the rules when wiring lighting like this at home? Can you use speaker wires of the correct gauge. Can you just use 12VDC switches from radio shack?

Article 411 of the NEC is a good place to start.
