The wire is not below the kitchen. The house was built based on my design and he knew exactly where everything was going.

It's against code. If a fault were to occur in the buried JB how is a guy like me supposed to find it. Not saying I couldn't....But there is often hairpulling and swearing involved. All taps have to be accesible. That is common sense as well as code.

Ok yummy you have me confused... you say this wire is hanging in the basement....then you say it goes up to the first floor. So is it dead ended hanging loose in the basement or is it just a loop of wire hanging down and then going to the first floor.

Besides no being allowed....Why would you want to put the wire in a junction box then cover it over with drywall?

It is a wire, romex 14/2 coming from the ceiling of my basement (which is not finished yet) and it is just hanging there in between the joists and at the tip you can see the three wires, black, white, ground.

Ok .,, but IMO if that guy done the work on the house he should able mark the wire what circuit it run to or from oringnally.

IMO for myself i will never leave any wire hanging loose unless plan to use it very soon and have that end of wire taped off properly and mark it clear what it is for.

i did see one comment you say see the three wires are " exposed " you can see black white and bare wire right ? and is that end is tapeed or wirenutted ??

if not wirenutted or taped then you have some serious safety issue will really come up fast if someone get hurt due the lack of common sense of safety.

my best bet is get that guy back and get him to verify the soruce of wire either fix it or remove that wire.

is that guy is a genral contractor or what ?? i know a good electrician will never leave the wire like that at all.

Merci, Marc

Ok thats better know I'm with you. Well your choice are to kill the power and move the wire. Get the electrician or contractor back and have them deal with it. Or make use of the location where it is now. It would be pointless to jb it and cover with drywall with no access...and as said it is not allowed.

Are you able to trace it back to its origin?

Also is there going to be a room where this cable is now? Maybe it is for a ceiling fixture of somekind...light, fan or the like.

lets say in a year your marrete falls off the hot wire shorts to ground along with other things on that circuit and no matter what you do the breaker still trips. How is someone suppose to check that box if it is covered with drywall, i am sure you won't appreciate it if they had to rip down all your drywall to find one box.

There is no wire nut on it, nor is it taped.

It has been hanging there for 4 years. I just noticed it because I am renovating it now and I put my tester on it and found out that it is live.

I have contacted the contractor, and he said he will send someone over to take a look at it.

I really don't know what that wire was meant for, because when I had my house built 4 years ago, I did not want the basement finished.
So it looks like the wire was just left there hanging.

I am not very happy with him, and he know it.

If this is the guy you contracted for the basement better have some idea what you want done before he shows up. Do not let him put it in a jb unless the drywallers know it and they can install a fake vent cover or something but that would be my last choice. My first choice would be a light at that location.

I am renovating the basement myself. I am now drywalling the ceiling.

The contractor that I am talking about built the house 4 years ago.
The basement was not renovated at that time.

You might want to try and do some detective work yourself to see if you can find where this mystery wire leads to. First i would turn the breakers off one at a time to find out what circuit this wire is on with. When you turn the breaker off test the wire to see if it looses power and you will find out what breaker it is on with and what circuit. Then you should have some idea where it is coming from. I believe you said it comes from upstairs? Can you see the hole that the wire comes threw? Trace the wire as far back as possible and find the spot it disappears to. If it does lead to the 1st floor and you can see the hole it goes threw, try measuring off of a reference point like an outside wall or stairs or heat vent or anything that you can measure from the basement and also 1st floor. If there is a recepticle or switch near the spot it goes to the 1st floor(that is also on the circuit that you found this mystery wire to be on, you can do the breaker test again, just flip off the breaker that turns the mystery wire off and see if this outlet still has power) you can try taking wires apart and seeing if this kills the power to your wire in the basement, If you feel comfortable doing this. If you are comfortable with electricity you can turn off the power to the outlet/switch on the first floor near where the wire goes up(and any circuits around it just for safety) and take the wires apart and cap them off with wire nuts for now. Then turn the breakers back on and see if the wire still has power, by doing this you should be able to find which wire is your mystery one and try to pull it out from the basement. Good Luck

Thanks for the information.

But the contractor, has said that he will come by and take care of it.
So I think I will make him do that.

Chances are the contractor isn't going to have a clue about this wire since he wasn't the one that put it there, the electrician did. His solution will probably be to just put it in a junction box.

actually all the wiring was done by the contractor, and his workers.
The electrician came in at the end to check everything and install panel, and whatever else needs to be done by electrician.
