Lights Make Clunking noise when Turned on.

Hi All,

Wondering if someone could help me out here. I am doing some renos with the help of a friend. He has taken out a single fixture and put a track light with 3 fixtures on the switch along with 3 recessed lights which are 4" low voltage. When I turn on the light switch a clunking noise comes from the recessed lighting. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Mark

Very simple check your low voltage transfomer make sure they are mounted tight.

Which type of 4 inch can you used ?? the remodel type or new recessed cans that will make the diffrence on this one.

Overall the transfomer should not be mounted loose at all.

Merci.

I will check the transformers tomorrow. They are Juno 4" MR16 Universals. Model # is IC44N. They are brand new and came highly recommended by a couple electricians I know.

Thanks frenchelectician.

Ahh you got the good ones ok check the transfomer mounting to make sure they are not loose at all.

There is two way you can check is either slide the can down and look at the transfomer housing { I know it will be pain in butt to get into 4 inch hole } otherwise if you have attic or other means go there it easier to deal with it.

Merci.

Well, I checked the transformer and it seems to be tight. it's definitely a noise thats coming from the box itself. I pulled out the baffle and the cylinder that the baffle goes into and it still makes the noise with no light attached. I did notice that out of the 3 recessed lights installed only 2 make the noise.

Ideas?

Ok I did not get a chance to ask you the last time but is this luminarie is on standard toggle switch or dimmer switch ??

Ok for two cans make noise did it make noise with bulb on or without ? if without then try to loosen up the screw on transfomer just little but not much at all or try to push up a little sometime it will stop the clunk noise.

Somecase the clunk noise can be transfomer design of inrush current espcally if this is a magnatic transfomer if electronic transfomer it will be very quiet unless you hook up wrong voltage { some will have 120 / 277 volt input connection }

Just off topic real quick but I am not sure if this related to this or not do you have large flat tv or entertanement centre next to it ??

Merci.

Its on a standard toggle switch.

It made the noise regardless if the bulb is attached or not. It seems it makes the noise with the influx of power. This is definitely a magnetic and not a electronic transformer as it is quite large and has copper coiling around it. No entertainment system nearby as its in the kitchen.

Thanks for your help.

And unfortunately you can't tighten down the transformer as it is riveted and not screwed down.
