Lights flicker when Central AC Comes on

Just moved into a new house, with limited information on the history.

House is 29 years old, with two central AC units, one air handler in attic, one in basement. At least one air handler basement is newer ~7 years old. Compressors seem pretty old probably original but funtion ok.

Every time the units start up, lights in the house flicker which is annoying. Any thoughts on why? I will have any issues addressed by the electrician but knowledge ahead of time helps.

200 AMP service.

Thanks

It happens. Voltage drop due to large inrush currents of big motors.

Understand but did not have this issue with my newer home.

Do newer units have "gentler" start up circuits that don't spike the current draw as hard?

I suppose it is just a nuisance but I am having some renovation done anyway so if there is something that can be done, now is the time.

Some do. My unit does not cause it, due to it is only a 20 amp max load. If we are running the washer & dryer at the same time, then I do see a bit of flicker. You would have to look and see what the max load is on the plate for both units (just do not go by the breaker in the panel in the house, and post back.

Could be the transformer is more heavily loaded or undersized at this house.

Newer, more efficient units actually have a higher inrush current.

Sometime the HVAC can help you with this item call either soft start or hard start kit which it will reduce the amout of current to start up your A/C compressour unit.

It should be real breif and not hevey flicker when the unit kick on but as few other did point on the answer with it.

So therefore there are few possiblty and HVAC contractor can check out the unit for you while the electrician can check out the house electrical system to make sure they are good shape.

Merci,
Marc
